Matthew Hayden 'disheartened' over Babar Azam's acquiescence as captain
Following the Green Shirts' dismal World Cup performance, the right-handed hitter resigned as captain of the Pakistani team on November 15.
Following Pakistan's failure to advance to the semi-finals of the mega-event, Babar Azam resigned as captain of the team, causing former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden to voice his displeasure and concerns.
In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Hayden outlined the "structural issues" that Pakistan's cricket system is currently facing. He claimed that these flaws are systemic and cannot be traced to a single person, but rather affect the nation's overall sports framework and culture.
The right-handed batter's contributions as a player and captain may have gone unnoticed by the accountable officials, he added in his lamentation over Babar's dismissal as captain.
During an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Hayden described the "structural issues" that Pakistan's cricket system is currently dealing with. He stated that these problems are not specific to any one individual, but rather have an impact on the country's overall sports framework and culture. He also expressed regret over Babar's dismissal as captain, stating that the right-handed batter's contributions as a player and captain might not have been acknowledged by the responsible authorities.
In the meantime, He outlined the true causes of Pakistan's poor World Cup 2023 performance.
Shaheen Afridi wasn't performing to his best, and Nasiem Shah wasn't present. The failures of Shadab Khan and Muhammad Nawaz were disastrous, while Fakhar Zaman never showed up and when he did, it was too late, the speaker continued.
It should be mentioned that on Wednesday, Babar resigned from his position as the Green Shirts' captain in all three formats.
On the same day, the board also announced that Shaheen Shah Afridi would lead Pakistan's Twenty20 cricket squad, and Shan Masood would lead the team in Test matches.
In the T20I format, left-arm pacer Shaheen will captain the national team for the first time. Shan has been named captain until the end of the ICC World Test Championship 2023–25. His first assignment as captain is the three-match Test series against Australia in Australia, starting on December 14. Shaheen's first assignment as captain is the five-match T20I series in New Zealand, which runs from January 12 to January 21.
